Kirsten Waugh

Kirsten Waugh is an emerging multidisciplinary artist in the Calgary area. Although Kirsten's practice is currently focused on the visual arts and fine craft, she grew up with a passion for music. At a young age she performed in multipal classical and jazz ensembles, playing different instruments in each.

This passion continued into her high school career even though she turned her focus towards the fine arts. Kirsten graduated high school with a Performing and Visual Arts Certificate from Central Memorial High School. There, she was involved in Dance Central, the Chambor Choir, and the Annual Galla of The Arts.

Currently Kirsten is attending Alberta College of Art + Design where she is majoring in Jewelry + Metals and minoring in Print Media. Her artistic motivations come from her personal beliefs in supporting the individuality and spirituality that one can find by looking inside themselves. The main narratives she communicates in her works are reminders for people to find fun and optimism in every aspect of their lives. She hopes this will solicit inspired, creative, and thoughtfully optimistic responses from her viewers.

"In my practice I have found jewelry and metals to be a good outlet for merging aesthetics, functionality, and craftsmanship. Through drawing, painting and print media I am better able to express more complex ideas like individuality, identity and spirituality."

"Right now the majority of my Jewelry and Metals practice is focused on metal and silver smithing. I make things like rings, necklaces, earrings, and broaches using copper, brass and silver. Though, as and outlet for more creative freedom I have found great please in making sculptural objects out of the same materials. Making small metal sculptures that place an emphasis on tactility has been an exciting challenge for me. Many of my objects are quite small and require individuals to pick them up and "explore" them."
